Well Ihad been having some problems with XP home. For one thing the plug and play facility wasn't working properly, so I went onto a MS forum and asked for help.
Some kind person came back and told me that I should try running the system file checker (SFC). you do this by going to Start/ run and then type sfc /scannow
Sfc goes off and repairs all your system files.
It certainly worked for me. I guess that I should have known this all along but I didn't or I had forgotten. Anyway it worked for me, if you are having problems with XP it might just work for you.
I have sometimes found that when I want to delete a file I get a message that says that the file is in use by another program. If you can't work out which program is actually using the file the program that you can get free by clicking the link below will help you out.
Dr. Hoiby's WhoLockMe program.
Meeting Formats
I was at the Northampton meeting yesterday (Saturday) and to me it proved that I personally much prefer a meeting with top line formulas and not one where the program is ‘padded’ out with too many formulas that are run more for the sole benefit of the competitors. Last nights meeting was organised so that delays between races were at a minimum and I went home with the feeling that I couldn’t wait for the next meeting.
Also as far as I could see there was a good crowd for the F1 and F2 meeting. So often these days, at all tracks, we seem to have numerous meetings where I think that it’s fair to say that all the formulas are all from the ‘second’ division. I fully understand that we need formulas that can introduce new people to taking part in oval racing, however should the paying public have to pay to see meetings that are made up of only these formulas. In fact people seem to me to vote with their feet (or should I say their wallets) and crowds can be very low at some of these meetings. I would have thought that at many tracks it should be possible to have a few races for the less entertaining formulas before the start of the main meeting. Of course not all meetings could or should be for only F1’s F2’s, National Hot Rods etc but there are other formulas that are very entertaining as opposed to the ones that only have a handful of competitors or where the cars have a less than entertaining performance. In my view new spectators can go to these ‘non entertaining’ meetings and be put off ever going again.
I guess that it could be argued that the ‘mechanics’ and family members that come with the lesser formulas and have to pay to get in, make it worthwhile for the promoters, looking round the terraces at some of these meetings it’s hard to think that this really is the case.
On a different subject I feel that at some tracks the bangers are ‘over worked’. Banger meetings can and do attract good crowds but like any good thing you can have too much of it. Here I’m not just thinking of it from a spectator’s point of view but also from the point of view of drivers who at times must feel that preparing cars for so many meetings is becoming a chore rather than a pleasure.
Novelty events bring in good crowds on Bank Holidays and there are other ways of introducing ‘novelty’ into main stream events. Perhaps a good example of this is the ‘speedway’ type event that is to be run between F2 teams from England and Scotland at Birmingham next Saturday. To the great credit of Incarace they are making this an addition to a full main stream meeting for F1’s and F2’s (and the entertaining Legends) so even if the speedway event is not to your taste you will still be very well entertained. Incidentally with the English team already having been published I can’t see the Scottish team (even with Gordon Moodie in such great form) will do anything other than come second (only joking, I think J ).
The promoters are not only enthusiasts but also businessmen so I’m sure that there are reasons why some meetings seem to be almost designed to keep the spectators at home but I must admit I can’t see what they are.
All the best Roger
